The new tasks of science, particularly policy-related research, present new requirements for an appropriate mathematical language. Previously, notations were generally intended for use by experts, working in problems defined within specific fields of pure or applied mathematics. The assessment of quality of results, and communication to lay audiences, were considered to be outside the realm of scientific practice, to be accomplished by informal means, and not requiring a special technical language.
