VANET (Vehicle Ad hoc Network) has attracted focus as next-generation networks to provide traffic information, flow control of vehicles, and safety messages. Unlike the existing networks, it is very important to predict the moving direction of vehicles because of the rapid movement of vehicles and the frequent change of topology in VANET. To do this, many researches have been performed to find new methods to predict the speed and direction of moving vehicles. However, it is very difficult to predict because the moving direction of vehicles is decided depending on the road types, traffic signals and vehicle's destination path. Therefore, this paper proposes the hybrid routing algorithm to solve this problem. The proposed algorithm ensures the reliability of data transmission throughout different routing methods in the straight roads and intersections. Simulation results using ns-2 revealed that the proposed algorithm performs much better than the existing algorithm for VANET. © 2011 Springer-Verlag.
