Abstract

The following topics are discussed with reference to pests of rice in the Philippines: the relative importance of different pest categories and the extent of problems caused by weeds, rats, birds, Mollusca, insects, diseases and Nematoda; the influence on pests of various cultural practices (Azolla cultivation, land preparation, sowing density, nitrogen level, water availability and crop rotations); interactions between herbicides and diseases and insects, and between insecticides and weeds; sanitation; progress in the biological control of Salvinia molesta with Cyrtobagous salviniae; and the baiting of insect pests using cloth bags containing Hydrilla verticillata. Alphabetic tables listing 53 weed species hosts of insect pests and 35 hosts of diseases, with references, are presented.
