Abstract

This chapter deals with the visual system’s sensitivity to contrast and the various ways by which it is affected. Specifically, contrast detection and discrimination thresholds and superimposed and lateral masking effects will be discussed. Effects of pattern adaptation and the consequent modification of the contrast sensitivity function will also be discussed.
