Abstract

The movement of an avatar in the VR space is often handled in complete synchronization with the body of the operator, both spatially and temporally. However, if the operator uses an interaction device with a narrow work area, the range of motion of the avatar may be adjusted by tuning the control/display (C/D) ratio. This tuning of the C/D ratio is a technique often used in mouse interaction; however, upon applying the concept of the C/D ratio on an avatar that is connected with the body of an operator, the sense of embodiment felt by the operator of the avatar is affected. In this study, we investigate the subjective effects of the sense of embodiment, presence, and mental workload while performing a point-to-point task between two points, by using the effects of the avatar appearance and the C/D ratio as independent variables.
