Abstract

Industrial or white biotechnology is the term used to describe the production of fine chemicals, active pharmaceutical agents, new materials and fuels from renewable raw materials (biomass) with the help of biocatalysts. The biocatalysts used in these production processes are either intact microorganisms or isolated enzymes. © 2009 Springer Berlin Heidelberg.
