Abstract

Forty years continuous efforts for shock wave research and its recent applications to interdisciplinary topics conducted at the Interdisciplinary Shock Wave Research Center, Tohoku University Sendai Japan are summarized. Development of optical flow visualization for shock wave research, use of micro-explosives for shock generation in air and water, and design and operation of reliable shock tubes and related facilities are described. Lastly applications of shock wave research to medicine and geophysics are briefly demonstrated.
