Abstract

A review of the present state of magnetic semiconductor (MS) research is followed by an explanation of the fundamental principles underlying the electric and magnetic exchange interactions occurring in MS and a survey of currently known MS substances, their crystal structures and principal properties. Various methods of preparing powdered and singlecrystalline substances are described and data on their electric and magnetic properties given. Industrial applications, made possible by the exchange interactions between electric, magnetic and optical properties of MS, are pointed up and the demands which such substances must satisfy are stated.
