Effects of Dietary Garlic Powder on Growth Performance and mRNA Expression of Hepatic HMG-CoA Reductase in Broiler Chickens

Abstract

This experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of dietary garlic powder (GP) on growth performance and mRNA expression of hepatic 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl-CoA reductase (HMG-CoA reductase) in broiler chickens. Day-old male chicks (Ross, n=270) were fed diets containing 0% [positive control (PC) with antibiotics or negative control (NC) without antibiotics], 1%, 3% and 5% GP for 6 wks. There were no significant differences in feed intake among the treatments throughout the experimental period. Body weight gains in groups fed dietary GP at 3% and 5% were significantly higher than that of NC group (P<0.05). Feeding GP up to 5% did not exert any adverse effect on weight gain and feed intake. There were no significant differences in the relative weights of liver, spleen, cecum and breast muscle. The content of meat cholesterol in GP containing dietary groups tended to be reduced as compared to NC group. Average infectious bronchitis antibody titers in chicks fed GP containing diets were significantly higher than that of NC group (P<0.05). The mRNA expression of hepatic HMG-CoA reductase was reduced by dietary GP. These results indicate that dietary GP has growth promoting effects and tended to alter cholesterol metabolism in broiler chickens. (Key words : Garlic, HMG-CoA reductase, Growth performance, Broiler chicken) Ⅰ. 서 론 소비자들의 건강에 대한 관심은 지속적으로 증가하고 있으며, 식품 내 콜레스테롤 함량은 소비자들의 주요 관 심대상이 되었다. 과도한 콜레스테롤 섭취는 사회적 문제 로 대두되고 있으며, 이에 따라 콜레스테롤과 연관된 질 환과 식이 내 콜레스테롤을 저하시키려는 많은 연구들이 수행되고 있다. 계육 내 콜레스테롤 함량은 기타 육류에 비하여 낮은 편이나 축산물의 질적 측면이 강조되고 있는 현대 소비자의 축산물 소비 형태와 건강에 대한 지속적인 관심을 고려해 볼 때 소비자의 입장에서는 계육 콜레스테 롤 역시 고려의 대상이 될 것이다. 축산물 내 콜레스테롤 은 약물, 식이 조절 및 식이 내 콜레스테롤 저하효과를 지닌 식물성 물질의 첨가로써 조절할 수 있다. 이들 방법 중 가장 효과적인 방법은 콜레스테롤 합성에 관여하는 율 속효소인 HMG-CoA reductase를 저해하여 혈청 LDL-C을 저하시키는 것이다 (Schaefer, 2002). 실제로 HMG-CoA reductase의 저해인자 (약물 또는 천연원료)의 활용은 가금 산물 내 콜레스테롤 함량을 감소시키는 것으로 알려져 있 으며 (문영자 등, 2002), 산란계에서 HMG-CoA reductase의 저해작용을 하는 약물들을 사용하여 혈중 콜레스테롤과 난황 콜레스테롤이 감소시킨 바 있다 (Elkin 등, 1993; Elkin 등, 1999). 최근 20년간 마늘 (Garlic, Allium sativum L.)의 약리작용 을 활용한 in vivo 및 in vitro 실험에서 항동맥경화 효과
