Abstract

In this paper, a novel compact monopole microstrip-line-fed Y-shaped patch antenna with an embedded annular ring and L-shaped defective ground plane is presented. The defective ground shape (DGS) ensures that the antenna would work in the ultra-wideband (UWB) (3.1–10.6 GHz). The multiple slots are made in the ground plane which further enhances the return loss (s11 parameter) for lower frequencies of the band. The design is printed on FR-4 substrate of 22 × 24 mm having permittivity ϵr = 4.4 and thickness h = 1.6 mm. The proposed antenna is designed and analyzed in HFSS software which gives a return loss of 10 dB for the entire ultra-wideband with VSWR lying between 1 and 2 throughout the band. Maximum gain of 5.25 dB is obtained with average being 3.3 dB. With the stable radiation characteristics as described by the radiation patterns of E-plane and H-plane, this antenna will find numerous applications in the new generation of wireless communication systems.
