Abstract

The purposes of this paper are (1) to review the factors which lead to rapid O2 desaturation when breathing is interrupted in the newborn and (2) to examine the various responses to hypoxemia in the newborn, with particular emphasis on the ventilatory component and its state dependence. Many of the concepts expressed in this paper were developed in conjunction with David Read.
