Abstract

In today’s climate of diversity, one element is critical. The more diverse our nation’s schools become, the more important it is to foster universal acceptance of each other. Teachers can foster harmonious, self- and peer-acceptance by intentionally creating opportunities for student growth in developing a mindset that welcomes each student’s contribution to the learning environment. Selected texts, rich in diversity and self-disclosure, provide a teaching platform that supports the individual’s quest for acceptance. As students learn to honor their own diverse roots, the value others bring to the learning environment is also respected. Teachers have the means to promote universal acceptance through rich literature and meaningful activities. Like magic, students create their own mysterious connections to one another and the world around them.
