Abstract

Reviews the book Feminist Queer Crip by Alison Kafer (2013). Kafer’s premise is that ableist ideas of the future center on two tracks: living with a disability is a terrible tragedy and a fate worse than death or the only good future for someone with a disability is one in which they are cured. Using the disparate, but related venues of theory, movements, and identities, Kafer explores not only the current view of the future of disabilities and disabled people, but how this politicized view must be challenged to ensure a palatable future where people with disabilities thrive. In this review I provide comments on Kafer’s approach, choice of topics, and overall fit within the current genre of disability studies. My comments are based on research and theories within the United States except where otherwise noted. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2015 APA, all rights reserved)
