Abstract

The book concludes with a discussion of sustainable practices for landfill design and operation within the broader context of integrated waste management and associated facilities. With the rising importance of preserving material resources and avoiding wasted potential energy, facilities implementing sustainable landfill- ing techniques can serve as a companion to other processes in an integrated fashion to create a more sustainable materials management system overall. The employ- ment of technologies to extract energy from landfill gas and to use the landfill itself as an energy production center through solar cells or wind power, in addition to using landfills as waste treatment and materials recovery cells, are just a few exam- ples of the opportunities explored.
