Abstract

A fast and efficient noise reduction method is proposed in this paper. The main idea of the method is to reduce the running time of the standard median filter. The major difference between our method and the standard median filter is the preprocessing work before filtering. We use a simple noise detection scheme to decide which pixel should be processed with the standard median filter. Our noise detection scheme is based on image hiding technology. The experimental results show that our method uses only about a quarter of the running time consumed by the standard median filter. By the experimental results, we shall also show that our method is more suitable for low noise density than other famous median filters like the standard median filter and the center weighted median filter.
