Abstract

Research on global networks has made important contributions to the understanding of globalization phenomena, but this research often does not consider the intrinsic hierarchies of networks. By examining the examples of the global air travel network and the online news network, this chapter uncovers the twofold hierarchies within as well as in access to global networks. Economic, political and social barriers create these distinct hierarchies, which in turn affect the outcomes of globalization processes. The chapter also calls for further research into these hierarchies of networks to further the understanding of global inequalities.
