Abstract

Many sense organs exhibit physiological adaptations designed to cope with a particular physical environment or to perform well for a specific behavioral function. Most of the chapters in this volume are concerned with the “sensory ecology” of the aquatic environment in one way or another. The present chapter will discuss adaptations for social communication within that environment.
