Beginning in 2005, Washington State developed and implemented a number of policies and initiatives to support education for sustainability in K-12 and teacher education programs. In the aggregate, this work articulates a clear vision for the preparation of responsible citizens who are able to engage directly with the interconnectedness of complex environmental, economic, and social systems. This chapter provides an overview of these policies and initiatives, their implications for the twenty-first century teaching and learning, and some examples of how they have been implemented.
