Abstract

This chapter traces the development of feminist scholarship on institutions from early discussions of the extent to which institutional design shapes and is shaped by gendered power relations to the present theoretically rich feminist institutionalism. Focusing on new institutionalism, the chapter also draws attention to the innovative feminist insights that reveal the significance of timing, critical actor presence and the links between formal and informal institutions to achieving change that will advance gender equality outcomes.
