Abstract

Heterosis has been of interest for many years. Investigations of the phenomenon have followed two separate courses. The first has been largely descriptive and concerned with the frequency and magnitude of the observed effects. Speculations as to the underlying causes began to appear early in this observational period. These speculations became phrased in more specific terms after the rediscovery of Mendelism.
