Abstract

In this article the technological developments of soft and hard magnetic materials are reviewed. Some of the developments are due to improvements from accumulated experience over the years. A substantial portion however can be traced to a better understanding of magnetic behavior and its relationship to material composition and microstructure. Such improved understanding has in turn led to the discovery of new magnetic materials and applications. Magnetic recording materials, chromium-cobalt-iron alloys and rare-earth cobalt alloys are discussed in the article.
