Abstract

This paper puts forward a reform model for engineering college English teaching considering that present college English teaching is weak in training of engineering students' ability of professional English application in China. Present college English course repeats high school English course a lot in teaching content, teaching goal and teaching requirements. The most important evaluating indicator for college English teaching and learning is the passing rate of CET (College English Test) -4 and CET-6. But that indicator is far from evaluating the ability of professional English. The results of questionnaire indicated that there is a great gap between the learned skill in college English and the requirements of practical work. It is suggested that college English teaching for engineering students be shifted to training students' ability of professional English systematically in whole four years college days from mainly focusing on basic English in first and second years of college. © 2012 Springer-Verlag GmbH Berlin Heidelberg.
