This paper analyzes the internal migration of the population of the Basque Country between 1991 and 2010. We use some statistical indicators to explore the main receptor areas of new residents and recognize some socio-demographic characteristics of them. In recent decades there has been a spatial redistribution of the Basque population. Since the 1990s the densest urban centers lose population as a result of the transfer to smaller population size municipalities located in more uncongested areas. The characteristics of the receptor residential environment have attracted different groups; young families with children and limited purchasing power are directed to neighboring municipalities well connected with urban centers, but groups with highest socio-economic level choose peripheral municipalities in areas of high environmental quality.
