Abstract

This paper addresses a mobility driven vertical handover (M-VHO) scheme to avoid unnecessary handovers for IEEE 802.11e/16e wireless networks. In the M-VHO scheme, the mobility of a mobile station (MS), e.g., an IPTV terminal, can be estimated by the pattern of velocities and directions. As the mobile IPTV traffic strictly needs to be considered for supporting high quality and large scale multimedia services, IEEE 802.11e-based QoS-aware MAC is good to use. Therefore, the proposed MVHO scheme is operated over IEEE 802.11e/16e networks. Results demonstrate that M-VHO scheme is efficient to supply QoS in various traffic. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2007.
