Thoracic strain/sprain can affect any age; however, increased risk has been found in workers aged 30--59 years old. This diagnosis is suggested when there are exam findings consistent with thoracic muscle spasm and a normal neurologic exam of the posterior thorax is confirmed. If there is a neurologic deficit or suspicion of infection, fracture, or malignancy, then further work-up is warranted. Thoracic sprain/strain usually resolves spontaneously. Treatments can include a short course of oral analgesics and/or anti-inflammatory medication, muscle relaxants, thermal modalities, bracing, relative rest, and a home exercise plan.
