From examination of nocturnal breathing pauses in the Sleep Laboratory, sleep apnea syndrome (SAS) can frequently be diagnosed. In at least 80{\%} of such cases, obstructive SAS can be diagnosed, while for the remainder disorders of central neural respiratory control are likely to be the cause.
