Abstract

Knowledge of the polarization state of radiation provides far more astrophysical information than intensity alone. Polarimetry has played a key role in the development of modern astronomy, providing insight into physical processes occurring in systems that range from our own solar system to high-redshift galaxies. The focus of this article is on the many opportunities polarimetry presents to virtually all areas of astronomy.
