BACKGROUND - The alpha-hydroxy-acids, specially the glycolic acid, have been implicated in the improvement of the cutaneous photoaging. Until now, there is not scientific data to confirm this in the clinical-histological basis. OBJECTIVES - Establish, in the clinical and histological point of view, and in the patient's and phisician's point of view, the results in the treatment of cutaneous photoaging with glycolic acid. METHODS - A group of 35 patients was observed for a six months period using a 10% glicolic acid gel and a 70% glicolic acid aquous solution topically for the treatment of photoaged skin. Biopsies were performed and analised pre and post-treatment. RESULTS - In the clinical point of view, either from the patient and from the phisician, the photoaged skin improved, especially the texture and coloration. CONCLUSIONS - The histology, in spite of not being conclusive, demonstrated in certain areas, although frankly elastotic, the presence of a bigger amount of collagen of the type I.
