Abstract

Firms invest considerable resources into retaining 'star' human capital. While prior work supports this strategy, most studies focus on short-run benefits, raising the question of what happens when stars remain, but environments shift. I develop and test the proposition that retaining stars can hinder firm adaptation to environmental shocks.
