The small intestine measures about 5 m in length, extents from the duodenojejunal flexure to the ileocecal valve, and is constituted of the jejunum (proximal 2/5) and the ileum (distal 3/5). The jejunum lies mainly in the left upper and lower abdominal quadrants and the ileum in the lower abdomen and the right iliac fossa. Normally the small intestine is in a collapsed or partially collapsed state, with a diminishing caliber distally. During enteroclysis, in all its forms (conventional, CT, or MR enteroclysis), imaging method of choice for the small bowel in which intraluminal contrast is administered via a nasojejunal catheter, the maximum normal diameter of the jejunal and ileal loops is 4 and 3 cm, respectively.
