Abstract

The long service life of silicone sealants and coatings in a variety of environments is widely recognized and has led to numerous applications. This discussion is mostly limited to polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) materials which are the most widely used and readily available silicones, with occasional reference to polyphenylmethylsiloxane (PPMS) and the fluorosilicone, polytrifluoropropylmethylsiloxane (PTFPMS). Environmental factors considered are oxygen and ozone, ultra-violet and other radiations, temperature extremes, water electrical discharge, and corrosive solids. The interplay of chemical and physical factors on the durability of PDMS is apparent in the discussion of PDMS behavior in a variety of environments.
