Abstract

This chapter focuses on methods of appropriate prescribing of drugs to older adults. Pharmacokinetic changes observed in older adults which affect drug absorption, distribution, metabolism, and excretion are discussed. Pharmacodynamic changes associated with aging are also discussed as they relate to drug therapy. Recommendations on appropriate prescribing and deprescribing are highlighted and related to preventing adverse drug events. Tables from the updated 2015 American Geriatrics Society Beers Criteria are included for your reference.
