Abstract

Ordinarily, gears and belt drives are used for uniform transmission of rotations between parallel axes. Here we focus on the nonuniform case, i.e., with non-constant transmission ratio. We treat the geometry of tooth profiles and pulleys and their algorithmic computation. Concerning gears, we recall a method due to S. Finsterwalder. Concerning belt drives, we study their relation to tooth profiles and focus on 'strict' cases which work without tightener. © Springer Science+Business Media B.V. 2009.
