Abstract

One of the greatest challenges that confront the surgeon is the care of the pregnant patient. Outcomes of disease management affect two patients, both the mother and the fetus. In addition, physiological changes during pregnancy alter classic complaints, presentations, and treatments. Abdominal emergencies in the gravid woman are frequently difficult to diagnose, and management of cases that are straightforward in the nonpregnant patient become complicated in the pregnant state. © 2008 Springer New York.
