Classification. The genus Photobacterium is included in the family Vibrionaceae and belongs to the class Gammaproteobacteria. First proposed by Beijerinck in 1889, the genus is currently composed of the following seventeen species: Photobacterium phosphoreum, P. leiognathi, P. fischeri, P. angustum, P. damselae (subsp. damselae and subsp. piscicida), P. iliopiscarium, P. profundum, P. indicum, P. rosenbergii, P. lipolyticum, P. frigidiphilum, P. aplysiae, P. ganghwense, P. halotolerans, P. lutimaris, P. kishitanii, and P. aquimaris.
