The article presents open source software (OSS) for library use. It discusses the availability of the programming code for software applications which can be used or modified at no cost allowing free sharing of information and easy accessibility. It describes the OSS that can be developed for different uses which can adapt to new technologies, preserved or archived. The collaboration of academic libraries and community users in the development process of OSS is suggested.
