Classical works in phytosociology (Braun-Blanquet 1936; Rikli 1943; Loisel 1976), published while the sclerophyllous oak was still widely dominant, defended the theory that in Mediterranean Europe, hence under subhumid and humid bioclimates (Emberger 1955), the climax vegetation is predominantly a Quercus ilex forest.
