Abstract

Brazil has been the largest consumer of pesticides in the world since 2008. The main objective of this study was to understand the role of women farmers in the ongoing production processes aimed at updating the place of the rural production in contemporary societies, based on the agroecology production system. This work has a qualitative character and will deal with data collection carried out with five farmers in three municipalities in the northwest of Rio Grande do Sul. In the territory under study, what drew attention was leadership, empowerment and autonomy vis-à-vis ecologically based production, defending agroecology and resisting the use of chemicals, as they aware of the causes of health problems and environmental contamination.
