Many new techniques have developed for energy targeting and network integration. Further, the methodologies have become more complex. Pinch analysis is an established subject that has developed from existing work on targeting and heat exchanger network design to cover a wide range of aspects of process design, particularly those related to energy usage. Pinch analysis can be applied effectively to almost any plant, process, or site, large or small. An accurate heat and mass balance is essential. Pinch analysis gives useful insights on almost any process and every process engineer should calculate the pinch and targets on his/her plant, just as the process is applied to a heat and mass balance.
