Abstract

This paper presents a new approach to obtaining the optimal tuning parameters of the proportional-integral-derivative (PID) controller in the automatic voltage regulator (AVR) system using the Jaya algorithm. The purpose of this paper is to enhance step response characteristics of the AVR, including a modified performance criterion. Simulation results indicate that the proposed method performs very well. Robustness test results also verified the performance of the Jaya algorithm-optimized PID controller. The proposed method was also compared against optimized PID controllers including the teaching learning based optimization (TLBO), bat algorithm (BA) and firefly algorithm (FA); the Jaya algorithm-optimized PID controller obtains the best performance.
