Abstract

Gives an overview of contemporary knowledge with respect to the biological and genetic contributions to exceptionality. Discusses prenatal development, genetic programming, genetic disorders (single gene, sex-linked, chromosome, and multifactorial), natal causes of developmental disabilities (prenatal maternal conditions, premature birth, labor and delivery complications, and natal infections), and common physical and neurological problems (mental retardation, cerebral palsy, seizures, and visual and hearing impairment).
