Abstract

Macular holes are a relatively common cause of vision impairment in the elderly population. In 90% of cases idiopathic macular hole is present. This type of macular hole arises from pathological processes at the interface level between the avitreous and the retina. The most common symptoms are distorted vision (metamorphopsia) and central scotoma. Optical coherence tomography plays an essential role in the indication of surgical procedure – pars plana vitrectomy. Beneficial postoperative results with elimination of central scotoma, reduction of metamorphopsias, and improvement of central visual acuity allow patients to return to a full life (Fig. 4, Ref. 28).
