A detailed study of the fundamental relations in the zirconiumhydrogen system was made in order to clarify the many points of dispute and to evolve a complete picture describing all phases of this system. These data provided the necessary foundation from which an intelligent evaluation of the engineering properties of pure and alloyed zirconium could be made. Another phase of this work was directed toward an engineering evaluation of means for utilizing the various high cross-section metal hydrides in shielding or control applications. These materials would combine the processes of thermalization and absorption, they are of considerable interest €or use in shi.elding or controlling epithermal reactors L)
