Abstract

The proceedings contain 28 papers. The topics discussed include: high-frequency oscillatory ventilation in a tertiary ICU in an academic hospital in Johannesburg; extracranial healthcare-associated complications in severe traumatic brain injury patients at Groote Schuur Hospital's neurocritical care unit; the utility of hyperlactataemia in the definition of septic shock: evaluating the sepsis-3 definitions in a sub-Saharan African intensive care unit; vitamin D levels in ICU patients and the association with organ dysfunction and glutamine levels; association between antibiotic trough concentrations and estimated total renal clearance in critically ill patients receiving renal replacement therapy: a pragmatic, multi-national observational study; and influence of staff shortage on work environment: critical care nurses' experiences.
