Favorable characteristics and confronting problems in developing the modern application of fish oil are reviewed. In order to expand the utilization of fish oil, daily and highly consumed linoleic acid and saturated fatty acids must be replaced in part by icosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosa-hexaenoic acid (DHA) concentrated fish oil, keeping the total lipid consumption at the level of modern Japan.
