Abstract

ST8Sia-V was the fifth molecule cloned as an α2-8-sialyltransferase and transfers sialic acid from CMP-sialic acid (CMP-Sia) to other Neu5Ac residues found in glycoconjugates through an α2,8-linkage. Like other sialyltransferases, ST8Sia-V exhibits type II membrane protein topology, consisting of an NH2-terminal cytoplasmic tail, a transmembrane domain, a proline-rich stem region, and a large COOH-terminal catalytic domain, and is classified into CAZy glycosyltransferase family 29 (Coutinho et al. 2003).
