Banking disintermediation is not new but it seems to have recently evolved from "product" disintermediation to "business" disintermediation, partly under the influence of emerging "FinTech". In a global context of various financial innovations, the article deals with the recent incursion of telecom operators into the financial sphere, particularly in Africa, and presents explanatory factors for the spectacular development of mobile banking. Starting with the traditional retail banking business, and the regulation of telecoms and banks, it tries to determine whether the traditional banking system is challenged by the new actors. Issues related to this recent phenomenon are explained through a vast empirical literature and several market studies. A new research field opens, as technological and numerical innovations in Africa make further research indispensable not only on the digital and financial aspects, but also in legal and regulatory matters. The article highlights the characteristics of mobile banking in Africa, and shows how different the situation is in developed countries. (English) [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
