Abstract

This paper proposes an improved color image segmentation method based on improved region growing. Firstly, the color image is transformed from RGB to YCbCr color space. Then, seed points are selected automatically and region growing algorithm has been employed for image segmentation under predefined three criterions. Finally, region merging algorithm has been proposed. Smller regions are merged first and larger regions are merged lately. Extensive experiments have been carried out on the random images from the internet by using the proposed algorithm and the results show its effectiveness. © 2012 Springer-Verlag.
