Population and Socio-economic Development

Abstract

Mizoram state is characterized as an agriculture dominated economy, as a large proportion of population (above 31.3 %) is involved in practicing agriculture. Further, shifting cultivation dominates (38.3 %) it. However, the return from crops grown under shifting cultivation is insufficient, even to support daily food requirement of the people. It leads to food insecurity and malnutrition. This chapter analyzes population and socio-economic status of agricultural dependent societies in Mizoram. It further discusses about how people develop livelihood strategies to cope with food insecurity and poverty.
