Abstract

Photochemical oxetan formation from p-benzoquinone and simple alkenes takes place from the lowest 3 n,π* state of the quinone. It is suggested that an exciplex is formed between the alkene and the excited quinone, but that a biradical is nevertheless the immediate precursor of the oxetan.
